Wise Old Man. Archetypal image that embodies wisdom. In the individuation process, the Wise Old Man embodies the collective unconscious.
Anima: (Latin "soul"). The unconscious feminine side of the man’s personality. She is personified in dreams by images of woman raging from prostitute and seductress to spiritual guide (Wisdom). There are four levels of anima in the male personality. They are represented by Eve (the biological woman), Helen of Troy (a woman with a particular personality attraction), Mary (a woman devoted to a noble cause) and Sophia (a woman of divine wisdom). Anima embodied the Eros principle, hence a man’s anima development is reflected in how he relates to women. Identification with the anima can appear as moodiness, effeminacy, and over sensitivity.
Animus: (Latin "spirit"). The unconscious masculine side of a woman’s personality. He is the inner man who acts as the bridge between the woman’s ego and her own creative resources in her unconscious. There are four level of animus in the female personality. They are power, deed, word, and meaning. The animus personifies the Logos principle. Identification with the animus can cause the woman to become rigid, opinionated, and argumentative.
Archetype: These forces are not representable in themselves, but their effects appear in consciousness as images and ideas. They are collective universal images and motifs which come from the collective unconscious. They are the basic content of religions, mythologies, legends, fairytales, and our daily lives. They emerge consciously to individuals through dreams and visions. As unconscious dynamics they appear as specific personality traits masquerading as ego.
Complex: A preset grouping of archetypes (ideas and images) including at least one emotional archetype which resides in the unconscious, but often can gather sufficient energy to break through into consciousness. Most of our life in run by complexes. The benign complexes are fine and serve us well on a daily basis accomplishing about 90% of what we do while awake. The problematic complexes are those that need our attention because they block the path of individuation.
Ego: The central complex in the field of consciousness. The idea of individuation is for the ego to become strong enough to gain the cooperation of archetypal complexes for the purpose of serving the overall goal of the Self. A strong ego serves as a traffic cop controlling the movement of archetypal complexes through the intersection of consciousness in a way that allows the individual to creatively move along in their journey. A weak or inflated ego is constantly getting displaced by the same archetypal complexes.
Extrovert. An individual who tends to trust broad based external input over their inner voice. They tend to form numerous social connects and because of this are less dependant on any individual relationship. An extroverts shadow is introverted by definition. This attitude type is set at birth and is not convertible without serious psychological trauma.
Eros: The feminine principle of relationships, irrationality and emotions often based in the unconscious.
Feeling Function: The personality function that allows the individual to prioritize what is important to them. It is the rational function that opposes thinking and the two never operate simultaneously.
Individuation: The conscious realization of one’s unique psychological reality, including both strengths and weaknesses which allow the individual to defer the momentary needs of shadow and persona and serve the Self as the regulating center of the psyche.
Inflation or Gradiousity: An ego that thinks it is in charge the all that is happening in the psyche.
Introverted Attitude Type: An individual who tends to trust their inner voice over external input. They often have only a few friends but tend to form very deep personal relationships. An introverts shadow is extroverted by definition. This attitude type is set at birth and is not convertible without serious psychological trauma.
Intuitive Function: The personality function which tells us the possibilities inherent in the future. It is the irrational function that opposes sensate, and the two never operate simultaneously.
Logos: The masculine principle of logic and rationality often based in the conscious.
Persona: (Latin "actor’s mask"). Various social roles derived from the expectations or society and early training. A creative persona is flexible. A persona linked with shadow inhibits personal growth.
Religion: What you claim your transcendent beliefs to be through your verbal statements.
Self: The archetypal wholeness. The entire psyche, conscious and unconscious (including the collective), and its regulating center. It is experienced as the transcendent power of the collective or God.
Shadow: The unconscious aspect of ego which holds attitudes which are either unknown or rejected by ego. It is the same sex as ego and always manifests it self in this way.
Animus: (Latin "spirit"). The unconscious masculine side of a woman’s personality. He is the inner man who acts as the bridge between the woman’s ego and her own creative resources in her unconscious. There are four level of animus in the female personality.
